Rain ponchos
and
Backpacker Shelter ponchos- lightweight, breathable, waterproof, and tough! hand made from
Tyvek 1016!
These unique ponchos repel liquid water
while allowing water vapor to escape resulting in a very comfortable garment for
hiking in the rain. The roomy hood is sewn on with polyester thread and
sealed at the seams. Plastic snaps provide closures at the
sides.
The ponchos are
professionally dyed. The dye process ensures that the
ponchos will resist fading for years to come. The
processing causes the Tyvek to become soft and supple. I
treat the ponchos inside and out with a commercial,
breathable, waterproof spray to enhance their
performance. I pay particular attention to the seams to
make sure there are no leaks. This is a very comfortable
garment for rainy adventures!
Compare this product to a vinyl poncho. Vinyl ponchos
puncture and rip easily, particularly at the seams which
are simply heat sealed. Many don't even survive a rough
weekend! Most "lightweight" vinyl or PVC ponchos weigh
about 16 ounces - much heavier than Tyvek. In addition,
vinyl does not breath, so a vinyl poncho will make you
feel hot and sweaty when hiking in the rain. |

Sizes:
The regular length poncho provides good coverage for most
adults up to 5' 11" and is easily trimmed with scissors to fit
smaller folks. It measures* slightly less than 80" x 60" when spread out as
a tarp.

**The dyeing process shrinks the Tyvek about 5% in each

Our Backpacker
Shelter Ponchos:
My popular Tyvek Poncho is now available in a
Backpacker
version with an extra zip on/off panel for added length
to cover a backpack! The panel can be completely removed
when not needed. In addition, the backpacker version has
tabs sewn on for tie-outs, so you can also use the
poncho as a shelter! All you need is your own trekking
poles, tent stakes, and cord to convert the poncho into
a personal shelter. If you use a regular length sleeping
bag, the regular length backpacker poncho is the correct
size. If you use a long length sleeping bag you should
order the backpacker long poncho.
